Suba Foundation is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) which is community based, dedicated to improving lives of orphans and the most vulnerable children in accessing basic education and health care. It is the Kenyan arm of an international effort. The Dutch arm is called “Stichting Suba Nederland”. We work closely with the local communities to find lasting ways to improve the lives of poor children and families.
The organization is child centered, it has a high level of community involvement and responds to the literacy needs of children in Migori, Homabay, Siaya and Kisumu Counties. We believe that the best way to ensure all children have a fair chance and a brighter future, is to give each child the opportunity to learn and grow early on. Therefore we work closely with the public (government) schools, to lay the critical foundation of literacy skills for children so they can enter school ready to succeed, learn successfully and eventually complete their education.
Suba Foundation Goal
Our goal is to reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS, high illiteracy levels, unemployment and social injustice among the most at risk population. We primarily support most vulnerable children through basic education and healthcare by providing critical services like counseling, mentorship, community training’s scholastic materials (Text books, pens, exercise books, pencils, bags, uniforms, shoes, school levies, lamp to study at night etc.) We also link the needy children and caregivers with other organizations and government institutions for essential services.
Operations
The organization has a board composed of experienced members drawn from the community representing all interests and social dimensions.
The organization has staff with experience in community mobilization, sensitization, education, development, monitoring and evaluation. It also has experience in child protection, advocacy, vocational training, entrepreneurship, HIV and AIDS.
Suba Foundation collaborates with the government agencies and departments, local administration at the county and grassroots levels, faith based organizations, community leaders, CBOs, NGOs and Consortium’s in Western Kenya.
The children supported are normally identified through existing community and neighborhood structures. After which the verification is done by a committee to ensure that the child to be supported is a real needy child and meets the minimum requirements. Up to now the project has enrolled and registered 30 needy children who are fully supported through education and health care however there are still 70 children in the waiting list who are yet to be supported.
The organization activities are guided by Suba Foundation Theory of Change which has the power to radically enhance the capacity of social change and initiatives to achieve its goals and demonstrate its impact. It grounds planning and strategy in the reality and evidence base of what is necessary to achieve change. This Theory of Change is also critical to evaluation, providing a framework that allows the organization to know what to evaluate and when. It builds on – and can usefully incorporate data gathered through – other approaches that have been developed to improve planning and evaluation, including ‘logic models/log-frames’ and ‘results frames’.
